What is Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis?

Who should get a Td vaccination?

  • Td is made for people 7 years and older
  • People who have not received at least 3 doses of any tetanus and diphtheria vaccine (DTP, DtaP, DT) during their lifetime should do so using Td. After a person gets the third dose, a Td dose is needed every 10 years all through life.

Who should get a Tdap vaccination?

  • Adolescents 11 years through 18 years of age should get one booster dose of Tdap.
  • Adults 19 through 64 years of age should substitute Tdap for one booster dose of Td. Td should be used for later booster doses.
  • Adults who expect to have close contact with an infant younger than12 months should get a dose of Tdap. A 2-year interval since the last Td is suggested, but not required.
